Loss of License Plates

If you lose one or both license plates, especially if your license plates were stolen, you should report it immediately. First, notify the police about the loss of the license plates. This will prevent you from being charged with criminal or administrative offences that may be committed under the use of your license plates.

After reporting the loss, you will be issued with new license plates and the old ones will be blocked.

The following documents are required:

  • signed application for change of license plate number
     

  • Fahrzeugschein / part I of registration certificate
     

  • Fahrzeugbrief / part II of registration certificate
     

  • current license plates if applicable
     

  • ID card or passport with certificate of registration
     

  • theft report
     

  • valid TÜV certificate
     

  • re-registration of business (in case of business ownership) if applicable
     

  • trade register excerpt and company stamp (in case of legal entity) if applicable
